I never thought there might be a thread that made me feel like a dirty old perve....
It seems that I shall have to work on my not objectifying half naked men.
    Bad megs. Bad.

Haha what has this thread become.  :D

I think this is called equality!
  • i dont think we should get a choice. i think all the gear should look D&D styled. no sexualization.
  • Please let female figures wear male armour. That works fine in real life, after all! (And, in the interests of true equality, male characters should also be able to wear female clothes if they want to)
  • It would be awesome if armor was racedependant too, dwarvish, elven, orcish,.. sucks to see everyone wearing exactly the same stuff :)

And idd, if I roll a female tank, I want her to look like a tank, not some beachgirl wearing a metal bikini..

  • *Hasn't slept enough*

I'd love to see small creatures that infected your capes like lice and started nibbling up towards your head.... shrinking it daily.....

    No capes!
  • Ashes armor is race-dependent for appearance.
  • @Dygz but is that just for scaling or does it change the actual aesthetics of the armor such as designs on it etc.

So I feel like if you're going to have skimpy armor in the game you ought to have it in for female and male characters.

On the other hand I thought I read another post a lot like this but it mentioned that the devs were going to have a more practical/ realistic look. Which if you're going by their plan to have open world pvp it would make sense if they wanted people to kind of know what they're getting into from looking at an enemy.
  • My impression is that it's the aesthetics. Seems like there would be no reason for the devs to mention it if it was just scaling.
But I'll have to try to find the dev quote when I have the time.

There's no class/armor restrictions, so may be difficult to assess what you're getting into just from looking at an enemy anyways.

  • I honestly don't know WHAT the problem is, chainmail bikinis protect just fine!aik.
  • period armor started with heavy plates but as a firearm in the hands of your vassals was as easy to train as pikemen the heavy armour that took about a year to make ended being parted out to make ten to fifteen guns for the noblemen's vassal to carry into combat. One suit of gothic plate would cost about ten thousand gold pieces where a silver piece might feed the lowest rung of society for year with good healthy food. a gold piece would pay off the investments of a well to do merchant in the fourteenth century for ten years. That is one gold doubloon. A simply mail hauberk might cost a month's labour of twisting the four in three and welded them in place. A month's labour where a well to do person might be paid a silver a day. that is three pieces of eight and six parts of one more piece of eight.

So looking at realism might need a bit of give and take for a videogame. I like having a mix of cloth leather mail and metal plates in heavy armour because that is how they were actually created so it did not sound like a person banging on the kitchen dishes every time they moved any. But the armour can be form fitting or have some many layers it looks like a lobster out of water. For the women and men's armour having the ability to have two layers lets them build various levels of complicated armour. The important part to avoid having it clip through each other. Having the option of having magical bands and plates of various types lets you have armour of many different cultures blend into an interesting look so it is not a hundred gothic clamshells on the field of battle with only the dagging and tassets varying in size and shape.

The best reference is really to walk through museums and look at the period armour that survived as parade pieces it shows what is possible, then you can build up detailing that takes the armour concepts and then build plates that can be welded on post apoc style.
They are not limited to anyone's vision except the guy paying them. The rest of us simply can vote with our dollars when we see the end result. I think having seen the stuff in game it looks like they know what they are doing and have all the other mmo's out there to see what works, what they liked and did not to try and see if their vision of what an mmo should be is fun for a large enough audience to make more money than they spend.

  • Yep, it can be FAR WORSE : )

  • I just hope they have a wide variety of armor styles. Most specifically I'd like something like Saber Lily's Distant Avalon set.

  • I was under the impression that the picture was concept art for the braver of worlds royalty costumes, is it not?
  • I hope the opposite. There are not much point in picking a female character if you hide it anyway.
Through it would be good, if you could choice from a loots of outfits, with the option to customize it, but statistically, the demand would be higher for the skimpier clothes.

So are you saying that females like walking around in skimpy/slutty outfits? Or are you saying guys playing female characters want them to look slutty?

I think you would be surprised if you polled only women asking that question to find out most would vote for practical gear.

I speak about statistic. Do you play with any MMO where you can customize your gear's look as much you want? The overwhelming majority of the female characters in those games aren't hide much, so you can guess which kind of armor have higher demand...

Also another (stunning) fact is that the vast majority of players are males, maybe the two related idc...

You can also look at other statistics too, like how much female and male hero got picked from the "ugly" races. Be it a ork, undead etc. If you check any game's statistic, you can see that only a very few players pick female on a ugly race...
On the other hand, for "some" reasons, the better looking races like elves usually full of women, I wonder why.
  • I'm still on the fence about pledging and I came to the forums specifically to get info on this topic.

Ridiculous skimpy armor on female characters is now enough to make me stop playing otherwise good games. So until concept art or screenshots are released with some examples, I'll just wait and see.

I have to say that I completely agree with the OP about having options. I am a female myself and I actually rather prefer stylish clothing for my characters, like dresses and beautiful looking tight fitting outfits and heels are something that I always like on MY characters. This is a high fantasy game and I don't see why it would be too much to ask to be able to wear heels and beautiful armours that show off a bit cleavage etc while fighting. However, I only like those styles when they are designed to be immersive to the game.
I also completely understand those that want only flat shoes and big armours on their female characters. It just simply is the case that people have different tastes in clothing, it is like that in real life and also in games.
What I would hate to see is if they were to cater to only one style. I saw that once in an MMO (can't remember the title) and the only option females had was to wear huge ugg boots, that was an EXTREME turn-off for me. So, once again; please Intrepid Studios, give us options! This is what my plea to them is :)

as this game isn't a korean mmo i don't think we will have to worry. but, there isn't a mmo to date without some sort of skimpy outfit in it. they will be here. but i don't think we need to worry about plate bikinis. maybe a revealing cloth robe. but i think that'll be the worst of it. or at least those are my hope and what I've picked up from what we've seen so far

Yeah sorry, I'll take appeal over functionality anyday. As long as there are options I don't see an issue. You'd think transmog/ glamour systems would be mainstays for high quality MMOs now anyways.
