  • SWG.....  Miss it. :(
  • Someone slipped me a Diablo disk during a coffee get together.  That lead me to EQ1 when it started. Loved every minute of EQ.  I feel games have been dumbed down immensely from the early days.   I've been hooked since though.
  • Runescape.
  • Lineage I

  • Ultima Online. Before most of you were born

You might be surprised how many old gamers are on here.  :)
  • EQ was my first real MMO.  Since then I've tested and/or played most of the ones that came out after that.

I used to tell myself that I'd never pay to play a game online.  Hah!  I practically live online these days.

Yep. We are here. Quite a lot of us...I was surprised that the majority seemed to be at least 30+
  • EQ-1; Gold Edition.  Loved that game, and still holds a special place in my heart.  <3

@CylverRayne You're right. They have. Part of the reason I am so excited for this game....I'm also excited for Chronicles of Elyria and Pantheon:Rise of the fallen. If you haven't looked into Pantheon, I would recommend doing so. From the original creator of Everquest. No hand holding there.

WOW was my first...late bloomer on MMOs.
Be fair to yourself now, WoW has been out a long time and there's been plenty of MMOs since. :)
I was only referring to not playing my first MMO until all ready graduating college which made me a late bloomer to the genre. But thanks for the encouragement.  :)
    That's not late.  I didn't start playing MMORPGs until 2006.  I was 43.
That is awesome to hear. Never too late. But at least for me...once you go MMO you can never go back to single player games consistently.
I, personally, began my gamer career in shooters. I still enjoy "lite" shooters like Defiance (way too much fun, imo, and the Lunatic voice? Just sayin' ...) but yes, I'm an RPGer at heart now. But I find I enjoy the SPRPGs as much as, if not more than at times, the MMORPGs.

Gotta say, at times, the freedom of doing what I want, when I want, is exhilarating.
  • Kingdom of Drakkar, technically. My goodness.
  • World of Warcraft

Pantheon is way too old school.
    The combat looks horrid.
Like riding a horse to the office rather than an automobile.
  • Asheron's Call introduced me to the new amazing world of online gaming.

Nexus Kingdom of the winds back in 1996

[The more you know *] free info
But (1995 sniper) renamed subspace (1996 November release out of beta) gets honorable mention from 1996+ ( later renamed Continuum)
when VIE {Virgin Interactive} was sued for someone getting addicted to video games
because he was so obsessed with the game he stopped going to work paying bills and his wife and kid left him.  * this is also why you have to click the Terms Of Service agreement before starting any game to protect all future games from similar lawsuits

subspace was the game that got me into mass multiplayers games
( more then 8 player doom) not a mmorpg but it opened my eyes to the genre

    since then
    daoc, eve, everquest, ffxi,
    flyff, maple story, Lineage
    planetside, ragnarock online, RF Online,
    R.O.S.E., Shatterd galaxy, wow,
and many other unnamed since then

And to anyone that ever played Baldur's Gate
The Helm Of Opposite Alignment ^_^ Many Kills , Many Kills
  • DAoC. My mom and step dad got me into it when I was 11. Once I hit 20 and went out into Thid to experience RvR it was over. Consumed my life after that.

To each their own. I thought it looked hard and fun.
  • Does Adventure Quest count???
  • EverQuest, 5 years of it, over 1 year /played. Loved almost all of it. Very fond memories, very good friends to this day.

As invested/enthused in Ashes as I am, I have been peeping the other MMORPG games in production, like Chronicles of Elyria, Crowfall, Camelot Unchained, Pantheon, etc.

Pantheon definitely gives you that old school EQ feel, which is understandable, seeing as how the devs worked on EQ.  And, though the gameplay seems stiff, and the graphics dated, it's hard  to judge what the game will be, off what it is now.  Same with Ashes, or any other game in pre-alpha.
  • Ultima Online or Runescape. I honestly do not recall which one I played first as I was very young.

You're exactly right. You cannot base gameplay on footage you have seen from pre-alpha stages. Nor can you judge a game based upon graphics. Some of the greatest games I have ever played were not graphically intensive and some of the worst games I ever played actually had outstanding graphics and character movement. Graphics =\= substance.
  • To be honest I have funded several MMORPGs on kickstarter, I dabble with Crowfall and keep up with Chronicles of Elyria, and I dare not tell you how much I have spent in Star Citizen. I am honestly most interested in Ashes of Creation and Star Citizen, both for completely different reasons. The rest look ok but I doubt they will be my main, but I will try them none the less. The games are not done... so you never know.
  • does neopets count - that was back in like 1998 or something... but the first legit was WoW in 2004 and I have loved it since the moment I turned the game on.
  • Knight Online in its original incarnation.  August, 2004.  Followed shortly thereafter by WoW.  Then Guild Wars.  Then LOTRO.

    A wanderer I'll always be.
  • I look at 2009-2012 Runescape (pre-EOC and before it was pay to win) to be the best MMO of all time (IMO).
    • Quests (each one was different with a meaningful story behind each one). The best PVP with bounty hunter than you would risk mid-high level gear and lose it all in certain instances. Regular pvp you could keep several items that you wouldn't want to risk.
    • PVE would work great with teams but would be more difficult to get drops with larger groups. The better you were at the boss, The better odds of loot you had (Solo PVE is just as fun as Group PVE).
    • Economy was ever changing with Jagex's weekly updates and evolving world. allowing the richest of players to horde gear is inevitable, I believe that this is a good thing---but don't turn the economy into a richest 1%. Keep 10-20% of the players rich and allow for everyone to strive for that goal (AMERICAN DREAM lol). New quests, mini games, challenges, etc. allow for new items to be introduced into the game and I'd like to see these released at a high rate. Allowing for an ever-changing economy that grows and grows as players do will make the game exciting and I hope to always something new around the corner.
    • Skills were grindy, but there were so many different ways to train including different rewards that came along with the training that allowed for differentiation when choosing the "best" or  "fastest" training method (mini games are life).  Top levels of skills should be VERY hard to achieve. The power that comes with top level skills allows one to help lower levels achieve goals easier (take that however you'd like).
    • Guilds were simply a huge group of people with common interests. They didn't massively change the game but made it more inviting to try new things and the more the merrier when it comes to friends and raid partne
  • EVE was my first . When it was first realased at the time i didnt even know what an MMORPG was
  • My first MMO, I think it was Runescape at first, then I moved on to Guild Wars and last but not least World of Warcraft just before the start of Burning Crusade.
  • I think my first was Planetarion, which was a browser turn based game with players all over the world.

I still remember getting up at 4am to send out my fleet to attack someone or defend my guild mates :)
