I think everybody is possibly forgetting one huge portion of this:
    Finances

With the current "reputation" of my.com and perception from the gaming community, I would be willing to bet money that they are on a road to bankruptcy without doing something right and something positive.

...And enter Steven with Ashes of Creation!

This game was founded by Steven almost entirely based on his frustrations with developers and distributors focusing on cash grabs and other junk for money.  He's done an amazing job so far, so I see no reason to stop trusting in his judgement and negotiating skills.  As far as we know, they're just getting a little stipend to host servers in the EU and push a reset button every now and then.

Best thing to do is wait and see.

I was thinking along similar lines, but in regards to reputation and sustainable business rather than finances. A successful publishing of AoC would go a long way towards cleaning up My.com's reputation, or at least lending credibility to their states shift in direction.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, My.com's role is limited. With zero input into the creative aspect of the game and the game's monetization, the only concerns are server quality, customer service, and data security.

Steven is surely going to secure the first two... and if My.com screws up with data security post GDPR then they will pay a hefty price. No system is fool-proof, but GDPR gives My.com some rather pressing incentives to improve its performance in that regard.

If that is not enough for some people, then so be it. I wish them the best with whatever MMO they drift off to next.  :)
  • For me its fairly simple.
I am not giving any services related to My.com any money in any form.
So AOC just vent from being my most wanted game to a game i will newer play.

And i am fairly sure this is a feeling shared by most ppl that have played any mmo related to My.com

To be honest, if they didn't do any contract with the guys from my.com yet, they should give up that idea already, me and certainly alot of ppl from EU would rather see the release date of the game being later compared to the USA one. And again I think if Steven and the rest of the staff really cares about this game and its community they better change this situation. Thats my opinion at least
And it's exaclty mine as well

Don't usually post but this decision is shocking. Also the way it came out just shows a lack of trust. And the game is a long way away from coming out, couldn't they have just waited on options? This makes me think it was a money grab.  I will be playing on NA servers. Much rather have lagg than my information sold/ account hacked/ credit card scammed.  Starting to feel like Steven is the new Brad getting Vanguard flashback with the whole trust me thing.
  • FeelsBad for you guys, i backed AoC simply because i wanted to Support the awesome idea behind the game. Back then i wasnt even hyped for the game, but saw the Idea behind this Project as a gamechanger for the whole genre.

That said it was one of the easiest choises i ever made in my life.
I did back it on Kickstarter, even without thinking of playing it.

The only thing i knew for sure is, that it would probably be the last MMORPG i will ever touch in my life again.

With that mindset i was settled to become one super hyped fanboi at the end.
Being excited for all upcoming News and Pictures around the Project.
And no matter what happens to AoC at the end (considering Alpha didnt even start yet lol) i am proud to be a supporter of this game. <3

I think Steven and his awesome Team have proven their abilities and credibility for so long and often enough  and clearly deserve some credit for it.

Steven is constantly pushing an insane amount of effort into this Project, way further than anyone else would ... and so does his Team.

Though i can understand the Frustration of People that have been mistreated by companies like my.com back then. I was one of them too

On the other hand i think its time to finally calm down about this Topic and look/move forward to whats coming next.
Everyone voiced their opinion loud and clearly at this Point.

Considering what Steven already did, to prevent things that have happened in the past, in future. also please Keep in mind that hes 100% transparent about it, who else would do that?

    I guess no one else.

  • Yes very sad.  Lost all goodwill for the project. Sad to see companies support these kind of trash company. Meaby the first month would be good? So get to play the game? But who I am kidding the servers most likely will be trash on launch and kills the player be go ftp and p2w then As other My.com games.

My hope is that they have good contract only for the servers and nothing else. As they have said that my.com agreed to only house to the servers. As other companies wanted more control over game. Hopefully there are large penalties for failure to provide goods on promised time with the right quality. As this company is only for profit by saving on every possible way.(customer service? what's that for my.com).

If servers work on launch I am content, Will forget the game for now and stop following and recommending. Meaby will be surprised when it comes out?
  • Full disclosure, I don't reside in the EU, and I have no recollection of ever dealing with any games connected to My.com/Mail.ru.  Going off the EXTREME reaction from the community, I can only imagine that these publishers have a less than savory past, in regards to gaming service.

While it appears this decision won't directly affect those on the NA side, I am deeply concerned for the community as a whole, and hope that Steven can explain the decision he made, and the processes by which the partnership with these companies will work for the benefit of all those invested in Ashes.

I hope that people will at least give Steven the courtesy of elaborating on his decision, before leaving.  If his reasoning/plan, doesn't satisfy, then what happens, happens.  But, we've come this far, together, so I'm hoping for patience.
Same here, but I have to admit, not following as closely as many, I didn't even understand what "had happened" until spending a few minutes on searching threads.

    Two things occur to me:

    1. No game company wants to share money if they don't have to do it.
    2. Clearly, AoC wasn't going to be released outside the US without help.

Now, that said - this event HAS affected me as a US player and I'll tell you why:

    1. I'm very disappointed there wasn't some manner of official announcement by email; instead, I show up for my regular pre-alpha 1 pulse-check and I find everyone huddled around my.com and spend roughly a half hour trying to figure it out for myself.

    2. If AoC genuinely couldn't deliver outside the US without help, what does that say about the overall project cost, "burn", and the long walk from "here" to "launch"? Again, no insight readily available and, in that silence, the usual speculation combined with the scars of many indie efforts past throb.

    3. Until I know enough to satisfy myself this isn't an indication of "serious trouble" internally, this title goes on my "wait and see" list. While no one else in the world will care, it does mean there is an unknown amount of money AoC is NOT getting from me that they would have received otherwise. (I'll let them determine that lost potential from my initial backing level.)

    4. Consumers in this space (including myself) are really quite tired of last-minute or "after the fact" slant, spin, and secrecy. Just TELL us, plainly and together, what the heck is happening and, if you would be so kind, pick the most obnoxious questions you can find and ANSWER them, because if you can hush the obnoxious, the chances that the reasonable among us (usually lurking) will accept/understand go UP.

My $0.02 worth, for whatever it may be worth.
  • i think the main reason for it to be not on "the Headlines" is, that the game is still pre-Alpha and all that happened was just, that there was confirmed that my.com will become the EU Publisher for the game, which accidentally ended up in a shitstorm - so to say (because of what previously happened to games before AoC was a Thing)

i hope this answers your question of why you had to search for it yourself
  • Holy poo.... holy poo!
I go away for a few days and come back to this!  I am so so not happy about this; this is not what I expected from a product of this quality, this appeal and this potential.

This is really important.  I'll see it through to live and would love to proved wrong, but I hope to god Intrepid honour refunds for EU if it doesnt work out because this is likely going to end as a massive disaster for all EU users.

I'd much prefer they either delayed an EU release and focused on getting it self published as we'd all expected or created a team dedicated entirely to achieving this to take it off Steven's hands.

I've already been off the Hype train for a while now, little things here and there. I don't live in EU but still getting in bed with a company that has a track record of the very reasons Steve has stated was one of the main reasons he said he made this game in the first place does not help the trust issues.

I think most people I know I personally would rather see the game delayed a year even 2 years to either find the right company if needed or work out what was needed to self publish but at the same time I'm not the one putting my money and time into developing it either.

I've got some doubts but their are still many positive things as well.

I'm kinda neutral ATM, I'll wait and see what happens and hope fore the best.

Hopefully things will work out with My.Com for the sake of the people who live in EU.

I will still be following the progress of the game and I still really do hope everything works out in the end and it remains the game we were hoping for from the start.

My faith has diminished some what but I still hold on to hope.

There is still a lot of trust with certain aspects of the game but some of the trust that was lost will have to be earned back through action when the game comes out.
