    Nah, your logic is unsound.
    Your logic is unsound.

You are using old english roots of words - but you have no idea what the Verran roots of any of the words in question are!

Fact is, players will call the class "tanks", so the game may as well.

The day you said that a literal water tank made sense cause its a metal shell encapsulating a body of water instead of flesh and that's why Verrans would end up calling people in armor "tanks" is the day I stopped taking you seriously.

Plus, Steven already said he's gonna change the archetype's name in a recent interview so yeah, WE HAVE WON.

This beautiful thread is over. We claim victory.

Definitely in favor of a rename, 'Tank' is typically a role shared by classes, not a class itself, and this may cause confusion.

Personally? Guardian, Vanguard or Defender seem like better suited names for this sort of class, but I support the notion of changing it either way.

I don’t know about you @mcstackerson, but I’ve never seen a class in my fantasy RPG games that rolls around and shoots artillery shells in my party of fighters, wizards, and healers.

Well first, tanks don't shoot artillery shells.

Doesn't seem to be a big deal. What with Tank being the only Tank primary, i would imagine that secondary Tank still won't be tank-role, which will ease the confusion... I wouldn't ever say I'm playing Assassin in Guild Wars unless that was my primary class. When someone says they play Tank, there likely won't be cases where they aren't playing Tank/x.

ok so now this is something to discuss. Steven has said that summoners will be able to tank. What do we do now?

    When did he say that?

My 5e Artillerist Artificer would like to have a word with you. He makes Fireball look friendly.

While players might use the term 'tank,' it doesn’t necessarily mean the game’s lore should adopt it.
The games lore isn't adopting it - not that we know of.

The class mechanic is an in game system, it is more like the term "hit points" than it is like a mobs name, or a node name.

As you will probably be able to find, the vast majority of people "for" the name tank aren't as much for it as we are aware that it *really* doesn't matter.

Most of this thread is taking the piss out of people that are so put off by the game calling the class the same thing players are going to call the class - because it is so utterly ridiculous.

It is like naming the fighter Melee DPS

We've been able to make the assumption that summoners will be able to be a weaker version of most classes for a few years now. Their place in the game is said to be a "jack-of-all-trades", so that would mean they need to be able to tank a little, heal a little, DPS a little and buff a little.

The assumption many of us have made is that they will manage some of this change in roles via changing their pet, but most of it will come from their secondary class. This then opens up the notion of needing to be able to alter their secondary class on the fly, as a jack-of-all-trades that is bound to just one role is just a shitty version of that role
