Issuing crusades?

edited May 2021 in General Discussion
We were memeing on having crusades against Tulnar for a fun but of roleplay racism and I got to thinking.

Could we entertain a Religious node mayor issuing crusades against X or Y people:

- A certain Race
- Members of a specific Guild
- Members of a specific religion
- Etc

I guess the idea here would be that the Religious Node mayor would nullify the Corruption gained from pk'ing people, as "the Gods will it"

This could potentially be broken, but perhaps, limiting it to certain races or religions, would ultimately be small enough a scope where it could be viable.

The citizens of said Religious Node would then gain benefits for the period of the crusade, be it buffs or mounts, cosmetics or other items.

Perhaps the crusade only applies the benefits to people of the same religion as the Mayor?

The crusade could last for about a week and then have a month of cooldown.

Would you like to see something like this? How could you conceive it where it would feel balanced and "fair" ? (as much as PvP can be)

I like idea. Maybe a religious Metro can declare against a different religion allowing for open world pvp similar to a guild war with similar benefits.

Can display the bodies outside the holy land as an example to other heretics too?

    Necro Pope Nagash the Impaler.

What would you guys think is the right length of time for an issued Crusade?

Could the length of the Crusade increase as the Node levels up?
    • Town - 1 week
    • City - 2 weeks
    • Metropolis - 1 month

    ?
    Sig-ult-2.png
  • You mean the Node sieges? I think having to participate in a siege every week would be pretty tiring. Maybe 10 days for a town, 20-30 days for a city and 50 days for a metropolis. As far as I can remember only 5 or so metropolises could exist at a time, so having a metropolis crumble every month would be a bit anti-climactic.

    Specifically not a Node siege.

Just a "pass" on killing a very specific subset of people (belonging to X race or Y religion).

It's about open world PvP, rather than attacking a node and razing it to the ground. Perhaps they all happen to belong to a node, but the node itself stays intact.

So a Divine node with religion 'A' can declare war now on another Divine node which holds religion 'C'. Isn't that pretty much the same thing as a "crusade?". Or a Divine node can declare war on a Scientific node as a 'crusade against science' ... or am I getting too close to a political discussion to suggest that?

There better be holy wars in the game , conflict between gods is the hallmark of epic fantasy.

I think the point where you're mistaking my meaning is the following:

I'm thinking this affects more Players than it does Nodes.

So let's say you're a citizen of a Divine Node. The mayor then issues a crusade against, for instance: all Tulnar.

You then get about a week to freely PK Tulnar, for rewards from the Divine Node.

Now, my idea would be that you can swap out Tulnar for:
    • A different race
    • Players from x or y religion

Other options like a Node would just be a Node War/siege. The only way to make it different would be to have that freedom to PK players from tha Node, but never affecting the node itself (no buildings or systems going offline, no razing the node back to Level 1 etc)

    I prefer philosophy over religion.

The concept of religion and racism are alien to me.
I prefer national-inclusive cosmopolitan cultures for myself.

this would push people of the same races to create their own nodes specifically for that race and i love it!

I support this thread. This is honestly what I thought going to war with other guilds would be like.

I am not against the general idea on an abstract level

But I do see some issues.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtG9mB2bREI&t=658s

At the 10:58 mark they talk about religion. In here they specifically say there is no combativeness between the religions. That is, between the Seven. So they would have to change the lore at least.

We don't know enough about Divine nodes either. For non-divine nodes there may be only 1 temple slot that followers compete for. Divine nodes could have more. Maybe, maybe not. Either way, if a crusade was called against a different religion, chances are the crusade is called against some of the nodes own citizens. I don't think that should be possible.

The same issue goes for a crusade against a race. I sure don't want my node mayor be able to call a crusade against me, a citizen of that node, just because I chose a certain race. It would destroy the cohesion of that node, and is, IMO, really bad for the overall community. I don't want Japanese internment camps in Ashes, to give a RL example.

A crusade against another node is just a node war.

Whatever way a crusade can be implemented, a mayor should never have the power to pit one group of citizens against another group of citizens in that node. It's simply too much power in the hands of a single player, to completely fuck up the game experience for other players that helped build the node up.

Exempting the node citizens from being targets of that crusade just puts them in a weird position of being at war with other players of their own race or religion.

Edit: I honestly don't see how a crusade could work in the game against other players. It could work as a PvE event against The Ancients, where the people with the most kills get some rewards.

For Crusades, I think back to Total War: Warhammer, where Chaos comes to destroy all the lands and fill it with corruption. If we were to have an event like this, I could see it working out in this fashion:

-Upgrading a Divine Node to stage 5 (City) will unlock a hidden questline.
-Players can discover a corrupt altar and accept its quest to spread corruption.
-The questline begins to spawn monsters that threaten the Node.
-The players who are able to complete the questline become corrupt themselves with corrupt abilities.
-The Mayor of the Divine Node now issues a Crusade order to destroy the altar, causing a node-wide raid group to end the threat.
-Players corrupted by the altar can defend it if they wish, maybe even transforming into mini-bosses, themselves.

This would be mostly PVE in origin, so I don't think a Divine Corruption should work the same way as regular corruption for the players. Still, I think it would be a great way to not only add flavor to the game but give players something to talk about for months.

So in essence a bit like a special type of monster coin event really, where players assume control of monsters and play them. I like it.

i think it would be pretty neat if some of the holy classes would have some perks pertaining to the gods in the game like a high priest can give certain element buffs to others while templars could buff themselves respectivly

Well there is three other gods that allow players to walk the path of evil and there is a conflict between these three gods and the seven others. So holy wars can very much be a thing in the game since its now included as a lore reason.

I think, if these crusades were to be issues against races for example, the bonuses should be smaller or bigger based on whether there's less or more of them. ie rewards and bonuses gained would be bigger from bigger race population?

Damn, weird discussing rewards for mass genocide lmfao

For a crusade I would view this as a divine node petitioning other nodes to go to war against one or more other nodes in an attempt to gain territory or influence.

If it’s just a divine node at war with another node then it’s just a regular node war. Sure, they can call it a crusade, but it’s a little wimpy.

Targeting a smaller group would be an inquisition. Most likely contained within a divine node. Said inquisition could be called upon for just about anything, including the nonsensical. But it’s more or less intended to root out the “evil”, depending on what the powers that be consider it so.

There could also be a form of Jihad or Mission in the original sense of infiltration and conquest of the nonbelievers. Which could be accomplished peacefully or violently according to the virtues of the faith.

Crusades against races sounds rather nonsensical, which is why I would put that under an inquisition. So for example, the powers that be among a divine node contend a conspiracy between the Tulnar and the Ancients and therefore issue an inquisition against the Tulnar to put them to the question. Which typically involves torture to acquire a confession. But since the Tulnar aren’t likely to submit, and I don’t think AoC has a torture mechanic, they are instead hunted.

The risks of targeting a race, which may represent more than one fifth the population is that you’d have to be one of the five metropolii to have even a remote chance to survive the retaliation. Which is why a node or two would be about the right size to target and have a chance to survive.
