Actually I think one of the first things I saw about Ashes of creation is a preview of a dungeon/water temple. Some great artistic work there; water temple recalling that makes me even more excited for a merfolk race in this game. It’s a pitty the merfolk rarely make an appearance as playable race in games.

That image is gorgeous! I understand the need for Dev's to stick to a humanoid silouhette for their races to avoid too much work on armor ajustement. While I'd gladly welcome a large array of various races, the ones I would really like to see is a Merfolk/Sea creatures like the ones in this image. And a cat-race. And a small-cute race like halflin/fae.
The name kind of says it all, but outside of the obvious I would love to see something obscure to really set the game apart such as Ents, Kobalds, Mind Flayers, or Kenku
First of all I want to say THANK YOU for asking the future players for suggestions! And Thank you for using Unreal Engine ;) ????
I'm happy if I don't see any Lolly race, I think they are to much and they are just kawaii kind of dwarfs ( not that dwarfs are not kawaii but I guess you know what is my ???? in here). Human, elf, org and undead are standard races that most MMORPG has. I'm very much OK with such choice of race or subrace. I very much want to see sexy Dragon rave like human.
How cool would be if the different race interact with the awesome environment that you have created and based on a season a race can do better in cold than hot weather or the other way around, feel lasy or energetic, be more powerful or not. Same goes for day or night. Feeling less powerful in one thing and more powerful in another thing, but only when outside of for example a Dungeon or maybe in new area for some period of time. Of course the different in stats won't be big, but enough for us to make deasisions or that we gonna do this week in the game. So we won't be stuck doing the same quest every week. Or even if we have to it will feel easier or harder. In a guild there will be any kind of race. And each guild will have curtain amount of Human for example that are feeling slower when winter. They can team up with another humans from another guild to do stuff that are not affected by them being lasy there we have team work. This in some way can make better communities between the guilds. Maybe create conflicts between races who knows?
Human/elf/dwarf are standard fare (not necessarily a bad thing, just done alot)
Would love to see bird people, insectoid race, fungoid race (as an answer to guild wars very well done sylvan race), humanoid bear race, and then maybe some form of race that isn't really anything done before, just totally original race.
Honestly as a game that already seems to be striving to differentiate itself from the standard fare MMOs, i think getting trapped by the easy to do standard fare would be a setback, especially given the versatility of the UE4 engine to create some awesome and unique races for us to thoroughly customize and grow to love.

I Totally agree with you ;) I don't Want play elf or human anymore ???? I Want to play with sexy Dragon lady that summons different kind of stuff to Kill You in the most awesome way possible.
It's amazing to see all these different Ideas. I'd like to post a survey or better to say several surveys concerning:
- distinctness of different races ( Recognition on one glance?) - traits of different races ( which races should've which pro/cons?) - actively choosing a race, or getting a race randomly (starting point still the same?) - racebound quests and attitude of npcs towards them?
does anyone know if there's a feature like that already integrated in the AoC Forum?
Would love to see Hobgoblins (I think Orcs get overused). Beast Races like felines or minotaurs would also be awesome! I believe at least one race should be something we haven’t seen in other games.

Yes! I'd love feline races, as example Bless Online is also going to do ..... agree with many others that I'd love to see and play non-human races, has always interested me more ...
@beardedmike I also think that evil dwarves would be a cool twist. They wouldn't be like WoW's dark iron clan, but instead they would be a civilization of dwarves that have lived solely underground until recently, due to a recent disease that they could not escape from underground. This disease, they come to find, was caused by the surface races and some of their new mining techniques that utilize magic. They detest surface dwellers for for forcing their people out of their homeland and have their own agenda even though they might need to make few agreements with other nations like trade agreements just so that they may further their plot against the surface world.
Lots of character customization options go a very long way in making sure that whatever races are brought in to the game everyone can feel like they have created something they love.
I hate having no or next to no options for character size/height. I also find female hairstyles tend to be extremely dull and limited in most MMOs and everyone ends up with the same one because of it. When I feel like my character is one of 10000 I just get turned away from the game. An example of this is when everyone in your class has the same high end tier armour and same high end weapon on.
Personally I would love to see a small NOT STALKY race in the game. Dwarf is dwarf let them be short and bulky but give the small character lover people something to work with. A non stalky Halfling perhaps?
I am thinking a long the lines of a more realistic looking small race here not full on **** like wow gnome or lineage female dwarf.......
8 Races if that were my goal I would do 8 races with a sub race split on each to give most variety without a lot of coding same voice same size different skin just go D&D with it
Human too easy Elf - Wood/Dark Dwarf - Mountain/Dark Gnome - Forest/Deep Orc - Greenskin/Dark Skin (or Orc Giant here) Beastperson - Catperson/Werewolf (yes furry people will cry if this is not here) Angelic - Angel/Demon Reptilerace - Dragonkin/Snakemen
All aboard the disappointment express. Even the original Everquest had more race variety than this. This is effectively 4 generic fantasy races, and 4 recolors of the same races.
put in as little work as possible in 4 races and then make copy paste and you can have 8. We don't even know if they have a recolor. So I wouldn't start to give them even this much credit from now on.
A lot of games have fallen flat for me on this subject. I need variety. I never play humans, I play one IRL and it's awful. SWTOR, Black Desert, FFXIV, and many other MMOs failed to reel me in partially because I couldn't find a race I felt any kind of connection to. I loved the tragic nature of the undead in WoW, the Sylvari in GW2, the Charr in GW2, etc because they gave me the choice to step out of my skin.
So, as someone waffling on whether to donate to the kickstarter, here's what I feel like you need:
At least one "Monster." Big, bulky, probably animal inspired. A la Werewolves, Charr, etc. I should be able to tell what this is by silhouette, and I should be able to be either a crazy looking ugly or a well kept creature who knows the value of a brush and clippers..
At least one "Pretty" race, which you likely have covered with elves. Every game needs its yoga pants.
At least one "Edge Lord" complete with tragic backstory of persecution and being cast out. Done best in my opinion by WoW with the undead and worgen.
At least one "Shorty/Halfling/Goblin" race, with options ranging from pretty to ugly. My lurikeen in DAoC gave me a mischievous feeling that I've yet to recapture since.
Obligatory Humans, Dwarves, Elves. It's high fantasy after all.
All of these things need to be easily identified through armor or it's not worth doing. SWTOR really screwed up when they failed to do this. I think they really could have sold the republic faction had they simply offered that as the side with all of the racial variety, painting the Empire further as the racist/stuffy side who didn't tolerate diversity. I think it would have helped immensely with their faction imbalance. Not that it'll be a problem in a factionless game.
Definitely a couple short races but more traditional like a Dwarf or Gnome. I'd even go as far as like a Rat man type character, but I'm not much of a fan of overly anime/cutesy type character models. Monster Races/Demon Races etc I can enjoy all day as long as they are done well, however.
It's useless to wish for any other races. Maybe they will add some more if the game is a success but for now 4 species with 2 races under each is what we'll get.
Bird people with beaks, talons and scale-like feathers. Literally just made a post asking if there will be more races in the game in the future and mentioned the birds in it before someone mentioned that they've already stated that they're planning to in expansions. My bad.
I'd be happy if the elf creation was flexible enough with skin colors to make one look like a dark elf, I <3 them. Though even happier if there were dark elves too :D

I believe there absolutely (at some point) needs to be half-elves and half-orcs...not simply because I like them, but for lore purposes. It makes total sense that within a living breathing world, some races would intertwine/intermix.
While I do really hope to have the opportunity to create a half-elf character at some point (and possibly a half-orc as well) because I like the race, it just seems like a huge inconsistency in the lore to not at the very least have some mixed races.
I don't see why that would be an inconsistency. In this fantasy world, it could be true that the species are genetically incompatible and no mixed offspring can happen between the species.
Though I'd be curious to see what a half dwarf half orc looks like. Make it happen, Intrepid.

Elf - Wood/Dark

(or Orc Giant here)
Beastperson - Catperson/Werewolf

Angelic - Angel/Demon

This needs work.

I like the way Worgens were done and Firran from Archeage...
So what i don't get shoes sometimes.. I have paws and claws 10x's better to me..
Bless online also has a really decent model for some anthropomorphic humanoids -- they are just missing tails...
I feel as if Lycans would fit the lore just fine.
Some type of Harpy i believe could be done as well.. that would be nice.
Human: Vaelune & Kaelar
Elven: Pyrai & Empyrean
Orcish: Vek & Renkai
Dwarven: Niküa & Düner
You can read their description from Emo's post or on the kickstarter page.
Ps. I'm still waiting for lizard ppl :(
